From a student connectivity problem to JOJO CONNECT.

JOJO CONNECT began with a practical question: how could students get reliable internet without installation costs, long contracts, or paying for more access than they needed?

Built by JOJO Technologies through real payment, router and customer-support challenges—not a hypothetical product brief.

At a glance

A local problem with a wider operational lesson.

The problem: inconsistent mobile coverage and costly fixed-internet installation around a student community. The first solution: timed Wi-Fi access through a captive portal and M-PESA. What changed: reliable service required payment recovery, device control, router onboarding and practical support—not only a payment page.

01 · THE NEED

Access had to fit real budgets.

Students needed a way to buy connectivity by the hour, day, week or month without paying a high installation cost for a temporary location.

02 · THE FIRST FLOW

Connect, pay, activate.

The original idea paired a captive portal, package selection, M-PESA payment confirmation and timed access on the network.

03 · THE REALITY

Operations create the hard problems.

Payment reversals, duplicate purchases, device sharing, bandwidth use and router configuration all had to be handled safely.

04 · THE PLATFORM

Make deployment less specialised.

Router preflight checks and guided onboarding grew from the goal that an operator should not need to be a MikroTik engineer to get started.

The operating idea

Payment should be confirmed before access is granted.

This remains the core of a safe, auditable hotspot workflow. A customer claim alone should never create network access.

  1. ConnectA customer joins the Wi-Fi network and is presented with the captive portal.
  2. Select a packageThe customer chooses an access package that matches their time and usage needs.
  3. Confirm paymentJOJO CONNECT records and verifies the payment outcome before activation.
  4. Activate and expireThe router receives an access instruction; sessions are controlled according to the purchased package.
What real-world testing changed

Building the dashboard was only the beginning.

Working with physical routers, DHCP, hotspot profiles and customer devices shaped the platform more than any feature checklist could.

JOJO CONNECT captive portal

Payment-to-activation recovery

A payment success does not always mean an access session was created. The platform evolved to retain payment records and support recovery rather than forcing customers to pay again.

JOJO CONNECT package management

Package and device control

Package duration, device allowances and speed limits help operators balance affordability with fair network capacity.

JOJO CONNECT payment records

Infrastructure for operators

JOJO CONNECT is designed to help hotspot operators manage customers, packages, payments, sessions and router operations in one coordinated workspace—while keeping the practical network boundary visible.

What JOJO CONNECT supports today

Managed hotspot operations, built around the network.

JOJO CONNECT brings together captive portals, packages, vouchers, M-PESA payment workflows, customer records, session control, router onboarding and operational reporting. It supports DHCP and PPPoE upstream router onboarding. Full PPPoE subscriber management remains a future product direction and is not presented as a current production capability.

Lessons from the field

Understanding the operational problem comes first.

What did router testing teach us?

DHCP, interfaces, bridges and upstream connectivity can decide whether a customer experiences a working service. JOJO CONNECT therefore treats router readiness as part of onboarding, not an afterthought.

Why not just sell Wi-Fi time?

Operators also need payment traceability, expiry controls, customer recovery, device boundaries and a way to understand what is happening across their network.

Who is it intended for?

Hotspot operators, landlords, institutions and connectivity entrepreneurs who want a more coordinated way to run managed public Wi-Fi.

What is next?

JOJO CONNECT will continue to improve guided deployment, network operations, support tooling and broader ISP capabilities—only as each capability is validated for real-world use.
